Residents and Farmers
We are a community of people who care deeply about nature, the environment and are stewards of our natural resources. There are at least two centennial farms in the immediate area of the Vella Pit on Earhart Road.
Spiritus Sanctus Academy
Spiritus Sanctus Academy is a private Catholic Pre-K–8 school in Ann Arbor Township within sight of the Vella Pit. Their Catholic schools have been administrated by the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist for over 10 years.

Father Gabriel Richard High School
A private, co-educational Roman Catholic high school. Located south of the Vella Pit, it is one of four high schools in the Diocese of Lansing. The school was originally established as part of the St. Thomas the Apostle School in 1868. As such, FGR’s early history is that of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish and School. The parish and school were a vibrant part of Ann Arbor’s early history and in the early 1920s.
Wetlands and Watersheds
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), there are approximately 703 existing Wetland Acres and 2,117 Historic Wetland Acres in Ann Arbor Township. We have already experienced a 67% loss in the amount of Wetlands in our Community. Dominican Meadows is a new 87 acre nature preserve just downstream from the Vella Pit.
